Fresh From Heaven

Every newborn that I photograph has a story before they even arrive. Some come after their parents have tried for years and years to have a baby. Some come unexpectedly or after years of planning. Then there are those who are adopted bringing unspeakable joy to their new families. Some babies are the first ones in their families, and some are the fifth with lots of brothers and sisters. Every single one is a little bit different, and always so precious and beautiful in their own way.

This post has pictures of tow newborn sessions. This little beauty is the second baby I’ve been fortunate enough to photograph from this family. Her big sister has the most adorable little personality, and those curls! I don’t know how her mom ever says no to her.

Just weeks before this little angel was born her big brother was adopted from the foster care system. Now is he so blessed with a beautiful little sister. He’s a little bundle of energy, and so much fun! I know his new sister will want to do everything with him.

For the Troops

Paula Cornell was with her husband one night in 2005 when he realized he didn’t have a toothbrush. He said it was no big deal, especially after going a whole year without one when he was serving in the military in Vietnam. Paula was shocked to learn that they went without basic comforts including toilet paper. She did not want our troops to have to go without. She began creating care packages for service men and women deployed in foreign countries. What started out as one woman’s act of compassion is now a huge non-profit, all volunteer organization called For The Troops that has sent out over 200,000 care packages. They even have their own storefront in Simi Valley where volunteers come in to create these care packages year round.

Through their website anyone can request a care package for someone they know. It is clearly a labor of love, and I was blown away to visit their location and photograph them for the Valley Vista Neighbors Magazine. Paula and her fellow volunteers make me feel lazy. They bring so much joy to so many people with their hard work. If you look at their website you can read the response from the recipients of the care packages. They bring tears to my eyes. It is proof that one small act can change lives.

They can always use more help. Click here to see how you can help For The Troops.

Senior Portraits

Senior year - the most exciting, stressful, fun, difficult, and long years of your life. A big chapter of your life is ending, and a new chapter is beginning. Senior year starts with all the anticipation of figuring out where you’ll go next year. The waiting and hoping for college acceptance letters can be agonizing. Last year we did that with my daughter. She struggled with not knowing where she would be going in a few months. Then there was the decision of where she should go. She had two options, and it took her a very very long time to decide.

Senior portraits shouldn’t be stressful. They should be the fun part of your year. It’s a time to show who you are right now in your life. Choose your location, bring 2-3 of your favorite outfits. I encourage you to think outside the box. Don’t just do what everyone does. Think of a location that means a lot to you, or an outfit that has special meaning. Wear the uniform you wear for your sport, or include your favorite animal (as you’ll see below). Don’t be afraid to make it all about you. This is the time in your life when you get to do that! Enjoy it. Give me a call. We can plan together, and as you’ll see below, you can bring your whole family.

Six Months Old

Six months, you’ve made it six whole months with that tiny baby, who really isn’t so tiny anymore. It’s a great milestone. Hopefully he’s sleeping through the night, or almost sleeping through the night so you don’t feel like you’re dead on your feet everyday. You probably have a routine you follow, and it is saving your life.

You’re even more enamored with your little guy than you were when he was born. I mean, look at that smile! There was nothing else cuter in the world.

Six months old is a great time for a photo session because your baby is starting to sit up, smiles easily, and yet he or she hasn’t learned to crawl away from you yet. It’s the calm before the storm, and I love it. This little guy has such a great head of hair, and the biggest smile. I love seeing him grow up! I’m sure you can tell his parents are smitten.

Do What You Can, When You Can

Something happens between the time your kids are in 1st and 2nd grade and high school. Life ZOOMS forward at a pace you never knew possible, and never anticipated. You get so immersed in life with children you don't have time for much else. The school days, soccer practices, dance recitals, swim meets, scout meetings, piano lessons and practice, band, chorus, church, playdates, birthday parties, PTA meetings, carnivals, tournaments, camps, field trips, hair cuts, dentist and doctor appointments, clothes shopping, baking, cooking, etc etc consume you until you look up and they are almost grown. I have so many moms of teenagers who come to me and confess with so much needless guilt that the last family pictures they had were when their children were toddlers. They feel bad about it and are determined to make up for lost time.

Ditch the guilt! I'm 100% sure those years are documented on your phone and computer (don't forget to print them - seriously). It's never too late for family portraits. Do what you can when you can, and that is all you can do. That is more than enough.
